What made you start your own business?
To be honest, I began Ms Painted Lady 14 years ago out of necessity. Traditional schooling and employment never seemed to fit. Beauty is what I knew. I wasn't particularly talented in any one aspect of makeup or hair, but I had desire and a dream.
What is your favorite part about styling brides?
All of it haha! You have a gem of a woman with completely unique taste in fabric, hand work, jewelry, shoes, style. I get the first look inside this top-secret information. I not only get a peek into the items she will be wearing, but I get the opportunity to guide her on look concepts that are sure to keep dropping jaws for years to come.

What advice would you share with a bride planning out her event looks?
In the Desi wedding world, the bride is the star! I think it's all about giving your guests variety. With look concepts, I would personally start with the main course-the bridal outfits. Once I had the idea of each vibe, I would then start looking at jewelry and concepts. I think there is something beautiful and daring about doing some clean, simple and understated elements fused with punched up drama on the eyes or something unexpected with the hair. Keep your guests on their toes, keep them guessing what you'll do next!

What is one thing every bride should remember to pack before flying out for her destination wedding?
My top two are sunscreen and block or wedge heels! You need a sturdy platform to help carry your heavy lengha on sand and across huge resorts.

Do you remember your first South Asian bride? What is your memory of that day?
Wow!!! We are taking it waaaayyy back! Gosh, yeah, my first South Asian bride was 14 years ago. She had 5 makeup trials with different artists until her sister found me.... on Myspace! She was wearing a white lengha with white gold jewelry and blue stonework. We went off the rails and did a metallic blue smokey eye and ultra-nude matte lip. I am told that you could literally hear gasps from guests as she entered the 1,000-person venue. It was so unheard of to go against the grain and be different, but it was a hit. That bride is still mentioned by others to this day. She is iconic.

What questions should a bride ask before hiring their hair and makeup team?
My biggest direct question to a makeup team would be "Does the work you showcase on social media and your site have any editing or filters?" I truly think it is so important as an artist to showcase your work in its purest form so that potential clients are able to see what you can do for them.
With any vendor, I always suggest you use word of mouth referrals. I also recommend you go to the vendor's IG and see past clients they've tagged. Dm that client to ask about their experience.
